That sounds like you are in freehand editing mode.
You can disable it opt cmd E.( Edit Mode Freehanded editing)
Edit > mode > freehandediting
The cursor should only jump over, if you have soft-wrap enabled. view >
softwrap. (opt cmd W)
But again, if you have an empty document, there isn't anything to
detect, since an empty document doesn't have line-breaks AFAIK.
