You need to enable full keyboard access in System Preferences ->  
Keyboard & Mouse.

But in your situation, I agree your current scheme seems to be the best.

Btw: great screencast! Can I add this to the screencast RSS feed? I  
can cache it on my server if bandwidth is a problem.
