That was not what was broken.
The problem was when I typed item, ctrl-<, I ended up with \itemize{}, 
not with what you showed.

It is still possible to do itemize, ctrl-< and end up with an itemize 
environment. It's now even easier, because if you then press enter, you 
get a \item.
But now you also have a snippet with tab-trigger item again, which does 
the same as that.
