For anyone having problems doing a checkout, remember to put:

    export LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8

In your .bash_profile, .zshrc, /etc/profile or wherever you prefer (or 
run it before starting svn). And just for the records, in 1.1b6 
TextMate automatically sets up this variable before running a shell 
command.
