Use Google with the `site:` term set to the archives. Example:
site:lists.macromates.com/textmate/ search
Yields this URL:
https://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=site:lists.macromates.com/textmate/+search&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8
