I can report that I now manage to workaround my problem. However, I still don’t understand what’s going on; and what the problem could be.

In the past, I have occasionally experienced a similar problem. My haphazard, apotropaic ways of solving it: make sure my files, including preamble I input are utf-8 (copying the file onto a new one); remove all log, aux, etc., files manually from previous texing attempts (my cleaning button doesn't remove them all).
