You've probably thought of these ideas before, but maybe you haven't ¯_(ツ)_/¯.

Have you tried enabling "View" -> "Show invisible characters"?

What about using a different font? I like Source Code Pro[1] but there are a lot of choices[2].

How about "Show indent guides"?

There's also this ancient post that enables a "indent guide"[3] in a completely different way. Speaking of this, @team friendly bump to make the "Show indent guides" smarter...

What could be the possible outcome of this? It would confuse user and possibly ruin careful indentation of comments or docs.
