Freehanded editing can be achieved by option-clicking anywhere in the text.

This will give you a caret that can be freely moved around (ignoring line breaks and tab characters).

You can get out of the mode either by clicking somewhere else, or double-tapping shift.

For overwrite mode, this is not yet implemented.
