since 2.0 will be leopard only, will the updater be smart enough to not upgrade me if I'm on a tiger machine?

Well, currently 1.5 mostly sees maintenance work, i.e. various fixes,
so in practice "cutting edge" is where the fixes appear first.

But when it's time to put out 2.0 builds, cutting edge will regain
its meaning.
