I mostly find it beneficial and unconsciously depend on it being shared 
system-wide. I fact, I often get annoyed when an application doesn’t 
use it because then I have to use the regular pasteboard and 
“destroy” whatever I was keeping there previously.

In TextMate specifically, can’t you recall previous searches from a 
pop-up in the Find panel?
