Spell checking can be enabled/disabled on a scope basis, so e.g. we  
have spell checking disabled for the tags in HTML but not the text  
between them. This is done with preferences items in the bundle  
editor, not sure if you changed something here, but since switching  
language fixes the problem, it sounds like it could be the case.
