I want to chime in and say I would definitely pay for the upgrade too.

One thought I had that would work for both side of the pay/free issue
is to have both options available, but have a few weeks delay between
the release of the paid upgrade and the free one. Those that want the
new version could pay to get it when it's ready while those who don't
would have to wait a little longer. The 'get it now' incentive would
surely spur a few people into action.
