It’s deprecated. But it is shorthand for having one sub-rule, e.g.:

    {  begin = '"'; end = '"';
       swallow = '\\.';
    }

Is the same as:

    {  begin = '"'; end = '"';
       patterns = (
          { match = '\\.'; }
       );
    }
