Not really answering your problem, but have you checked out You 
Software's Desktops [ http://www.yousoftware.com/desktops/ ]. It's 
really cool and works really well even though it's still in beta. Have 
a look at their page and see the animation of how the virtual desktops 
works. It's cool. :)
