Oy, sorry about that. I just discovered why apostrophes don't work in 
checkin comments, even though I explicitly accounted for them: In bash, 
'\' == \, which means '\'' is a syntax error. This checkin both fixes 
the problem (using string concatenation) and tests the fix.
